Sawtooth Oak

If you want to add a great fall food source to your land but don’t want to wait decades for it to start producing then sawtooth oaks are a great choice for you. Sawtooth oaks are one of the earliest producing oaks with acorn production starting in only 6-8 years. Sawtooths are heavy producers and have large crops of very palatable acorns every year. Its no surprise that sawtooth oaks are the most popular oak planted for wildlife. Deer and turkeys alike can’t get enough of the acorns produced by these oaks.

Sawtooth oaks are easy to grow and do well in a wide range of soil types and climates and require little to no maintenance after they get established. They prefer acidic, well drained soil and full sun. Suitable for USDA growing zones 5-9.

Plant each tree with one of our Survival Kits (a Tree Pro tube and a slow-release fertilizer block), follow our planting instructions, and it’s covered by our 1-Year Survival Guarantee. Full details here.

Add Late Drop and keep chestnuts falling into December.

By November most acorns have been mopped up and the woods go quiet. Late Drop Hybrids are selected to drop Nov–late Dec, right when deer have the fewest options. Our recommendation: a 1:1 mix.

Questions we get about Sawtooth Oak

This tree

6–8 years, which is about as fast as an oak gets. Most oaks make you wait 15–20. If you want acorns on the ground in this decade, sawtooth is the one.

At least two β€” oaks need another oak nearby to pollinate. Most people put in 5–10 per spot, 25–30ft apart, so acorns fall in a tight area deer can work.

Zones 5–9. They want full sun and acidic, well-drained ground (pH 5.5–7.0), but they're not picky beyond that and need almost no maintenance once established.

Sawtooths drop earlier (August into mid-October) and are the best bow-season oak we sell. But acorns carry tannins and chestnuts don't, so if deer have both, they'll take the chestnuts. Plant sawtooths to cover the early window, chestnuts for the main event.

Every tree

We don't ship on the day you order. We take orders in advance and ship at the proper time for spring planting in each region β€” from mid-December in the Deep South through the end of May up north. Pick your state below to see your exact window. Orders placed after your region has already shipped go out within 5–10 business days.

We ship at planting time for your zone β€” mid-December in the Deep South through late May up north. Pick your state to see your window.

A Tree Pro grow tube and a slow-release fertilizer block for one tree. The tube protects the seedling from deer and rabbits and can double its growth rate; the fertilizer block feeds the tree through its first growing season. Every tree we ship is already inoculated with beneficial mycorrhizae, so there's nothing else to add β€” plant it in the kit, follow the Growing Guide, and it's covered by our 1-Year Survival Guarantee.

Plant with a Survival Kit and we guarantee the tree for a full year. If a tree dies within one year of the day it's delivered, we'll issue you store credit for what you paid for it. You don't have to worry about spending your money on something that may or may not make it.

To be covered, plant each tree with one of our Survival Kits (a Tree Pro tube and a slow-release fertilizer block), keep the tube on, and follow our planting instructions. Email us photos and your order number within a year of delivery.

The Whitetail Hill difference

5 things we do that other nurseries don't.

We ship when it's time to plant

Not the day you order. Your trees go out in the spring planting window for your region β€” southern states first, then north as the ground thaws. You get an email with tracking before they leave the farm.

See your ship dates β†’

Sized to survive the move β€” on purpose

Everybody wants a bigger tree. We've planted thousands of both, and the smaller one wins. Ours ship at one year old, sized by variety, with a root system built to take off. A tree that size roots in fast and grows. A big tree spends its first two seasons recovering from the move, and often never catches up.

Only trees that earn a spot on hunting land

We're hunters. Every one of our 30+ varieties is picked for what it does for deer: when it drops, how hard it draws, whether it produces every year, and whether it'll grow on the rough ground food plots sit on. If it doesn't help you kill deer, we don't sell it.

We're here after the sale

Planting questions, a tube that blew over, a tree that's slow to leaf out β€” call or text 256-415-4085, weekdays 9–5, or email contact@whitetailhill.com. A real person answers.

Backed by our 1-Year Survival Guarantee

Plant it with a Survival Kit and follow the Growing Guide, and we guarantee every tree we ship for a full year from delivery. You won't find that from other nurseries.

Sawtooth Oak

Initial plant so far out of order all but 4 came out of dormancy. 2 saw tooth 2 chest nut did not grow green leaves/dead. Waited longer than expected for delivery. Would of preferred early end of March beginning of April, instead of end of April beginning of May. But realize weather patterns change. Will monitor to see how many make a full cycle.

Got my β€œlate drop” chestnuts planted, I was very happy with the way they were packaged roots were moist and the quality of the trees was good. Planted among some trees from last year in hopes of creating a stand of chestnuts in the middle of the farm.
