Sawtooth Oak
If you want to add a great fall food source to your land but donβt want to wait decades for it to start producing then sawtooth oaks are a great choice for you. Sawtooth oaks are one of the earliest producing oaks with acorn production starting in only 6-8 years. Sawtooths are heavy producers and have large crops of very palatable acorns every year. Its no surprise that sawtooth oaks are the most popular oak planted for wildlife. Deer and turkeys alike canβt get enough of the acorns produced by these oaks.
Sawtooth oaks are easy to grow and do well in a wide range of soil types and climates and require little to no maintenance after they get established. They prefer acidic, well drained soil and full sun. Suitable for USDA growing zones 5-9.
Plant each tree with one of our Survival Kits (a Tree Pro tube and a slow-release fertilizer block), follow our planting instructions, and itβs covered by our 1-Year Survival Guarantee. Full details here.

Questions we get about Sawtooth Oak
6β8 years, which is about as fast as an oak gets. Most oaks make you wait 15β20. If you want acorns on the ground in this decade, sawtooth is the one.
At least two β oaks need another oak nearby to pollinate. Most people put in 5β10 per spot, 25β30ft apart, so acorns fall in a tight area deer can work.
Zones 5β9. They want full sun and acidic, well-drained ground (pH 5.5β7.0), but they're not picky beyond that and need almost no maintenance once established.
Sawtooths drop earlier (August into mid-October) and are the best bow-season oak we sell. But acorns carry tannins and chestnuts don't, so if deer have both, they'll take the chestnuts. Plant sawtooths to cover the early window, chestnuts for the main event.
