Maintenance

Our trees are all low maintenance but there are a few things you can do to ensure they're protected and well supplied with everything they need to thrive.

Fertilizing

Fertilizing your trees can give them a boost and help ensure they have everything they need to thrive. A good all purpose fertilizer such as a 16-4-8, 12-6-6 or 12-4-8 does great when applied to trees in the spring. Slow release fertilizer reduces the risk of burning your trees and reduces stress as well. Apply fertilizer around the tree on the surface of the soil or mulch and rain water will carry nutrients to the roots. Do not apply fertilizer after mid summer as it can cause plants to put on new growth which will be killed by the first frost.

Watering

After the first growing season it is usually not necessary to water your trees unless you experience prolonged periods of dry weather, in which case occasional watering may be necessary for another few seasons.

Pest control

The varieties we sell have been selected to be very hardy and generally have few problems with pests, however sometimes pests may still occur. If you notice defoliation by japanese beetles, caterpillars, or any other insect, a good all purpose insecticide such as Sevin should take care of the problem.
