If you can't tell by our name, chestnuts are our bread and butter here at Whitetail Hill Chestnuts. If we had to recommend just one tree that we think every landowner should consider planting it would be our hybrid chestnuts. Chestnuts provide excellent nutrition, unmatched drawing power, are easy to grow, and are one of the fastest producing trees you can plant with production starting in just 3-5 years.

Chestnuts have extremely high drawing power for deer. They contain large amounts of carbs that help deer pack on fat stores ahead of winter and provide bucks with the needed energy for the rut.

Chestnuts have several advantages over oaks: Unlike many oaks chestnuts produce every year giving you a consistent food source you can count on year after year. Also unlike oaks, they contain no tannins. This gives them a sweet flavor that deer love. In fact, some studies have shown deer prefer chestnuts by as much as 100:1 over acorns. Deer absolutely love chestnuts and if your goal is to draw and hold deer on your land, you'll love chestnuts too. They simply can't be beat for attracting deer. Chestnuts are also attractive to other wildlife such as turkeys, raccoons, squirrels, and black bears.

Our trees are fast growing and will reach 6-8ft tall by the end of the next growing season under good conditions. They will produce nuts within 3-5 years making them one of the fastest producing wildlife tree plantings available. Mature trees can produce 100lbs of nuts per year, creating a huge food resource that will draw deer for miles around.

Planting and Growing

Our trees are container grown trees, they ship fully leafed out and ready to grow. This means they can be planted immediately at any time of year. The only limitation to planting time is adequate moisture. While many have had success planting these trees during the summer there are some additional steps to take to ensure success when planting during the summer. Mycorrhizae

You've heard of inoculating plants like beans, peas, and clover, but did you know that you should be inoculating your trees too? That's right, trees have beneficial microbes that live on their roots just like other plants do. These microbes are called mycorrhizae. They grow in and on tree root systems and help them take up nutrients and water from the soil more effectively. Mycorrhizae increase root growth and root mass significantly which leads to healthier, more drought resistant, and faster growing plants. Many studies have shown the benefits of mycorrhizae for all kinds of plants including trees and we have seen it first hand in trees planted here on our farm. We don't plant any trees on our farm without mycorrhizae because of the difference it makes in drought tolerance, growth rate, and overall health of the tree. The mycorrhizae we sell is a strain known as Rhizophagus intraradices and is a beneficial soil fungus that forms a sponge-like mass on root systems helping them take up and store water and nutrients more effectively. It essentially increases the surface area of the root system. This mycorrhizae comes in the form of dry pellets that just need to be sprinkled in the hole before planting your tree. It’s an easy step that makes a huge difference in the success of your trees. Just sprinkle approximately one tablespoon into the hole just before planting your tree, then plant your tree as normal and the microbes will do the rest, easy as that.
